How to Install Droid Android 2.2 Instructions

Android 2.2, also known as Froyo(short for Frozen Yogurt), is being released for the Motorola Droid officially within this week sometime.  However, for those of you who don't want to wait, a version can be installed that will update your phone to Android 2.2. Be advised that this is not an official release, but it does work, although you could turn you phone into a coaster if you are not careful and follow all of the instructions properly. This update to the original Android 2.2 for the Droid fixes numerous issues and appears to be a final release build.  The stock kernel can be overclocked to 800 mhz, the wifi works without having to download any fixes, and it is completely legit!

Here are the instructions from Droid-Life.com, who created this method.

First, you must root your phone operating Android 2.1.  This can be a risky process, so make sure you follow all of the instructions to a "T".  You can find the instructions here: Rooting your Android 2.1

Second, download this zip file and open it: Droid Android 2.2

Now here are the instructions--**remember, you MUST BE ROOTED for this to work properly**

1) Unzip and drop file in Nandroid directory on SDCard
2)  Open ROM Manager and flash “alternate recovery” (SPRecovery).
3)  When it finishes, scroll up and choose the option to “Reboot into Recovery.”
4)  When SPRecovery loads, choose “backup/restore.”
5)  Choose “Advanced nandroid restore.”
6)  Select “Choose backup” and find the “droidlifefroyo-BS-20100608-0521″ backup.
7)  Select “Perform restore.”
8)  When it finishes, hit the “power” key to go back to the main menu and choose “reboot.”
9)  When it reboots, you should be Froyo’d with root!

Updates: Time to answer some questions from the comments…
-Q: Is this stable?
-A: Yes it is. We wouldn’t post it if it wasn’t.
-Q:  I lost root! Now what?
-A: Boot into recovery and apply this update.zip
-Q:  Can this be overclocked?
-A:  Yes.  The previous kernels we posted should all work.
-Q:  Is this the same build as the one posted everywhere last night?
-A:  No idea.  I got this from the original leak.
-Q: Will the previous radio update work?
-A: Yes it should still work.
-Q: What does “unrar” mean?
-A: Unraring is like unzipping.

Well, there you have it!  Your Droid is now running Android 2.2 and you can be the coolest person in your group of friends for having it before everyone else!
